PANASONIC LUMIX: THE 'ALL ROUNDER' COMPACT CAMERA THAT'S PERFECT FOR BLOGGING

*These photos were taken on my iPad which is why they're a slightly different size to normal* :)

Whilst pretty photographs are something I've always appreciated and admired hugely, it wasn't until I started blogging that I developed a real interest in photography. Bright, clear and sharp photographs are one of the main things that catch my attention when visiting a new blog and I find myself completely in awe of some fellow blogger's snapshots *oh how I lust over those blurry backgrounds* Now I know my photos aren't particularly fancy or groundbreaking, but I've been trying really hard in recent months to improve the clarity, lighting and brightness of my photos and I've been feeling so much happier with the quality of them since the Panasonic Lumix TZ55 came into my life. Whilst it isn't the most exciting or snazzy camera on the market, it makes a really fantastic blogging camera and is very quick and easy to use (which is perfect for photography novices like me!), plus it's quite a reasonable price compared to the other cameras I've seen bloggers recommending and is currently on offer on Amazon for £135 rather than £210 :)

First things first, I have to have a little rave about the flip screen; it's the handiest thing ever to have as a blogger and basically does the same as a viewfinder which you get on more fancy cameras like DSLRs. It makes taking outfit photos a million, trillion times easier as you can check you're in the right position in the frame, the camera is in focus and that your poses look as ok as possible (I always feel like such an awkward Annie posing in my bedroom!), which is a total godsend if you don't have anyone who can take outfit photos for you. The camera has a timer on it too which you can set to 2 seconds or 10 seconds, so I use the 10 second option to give me time to get into position, check my hair's behaving itself and that I don't look like a total twat. It's so quick and easy to whip the camera out, pop it on my chest of drawers and take a few outfit snaps which has really encouraged me to start featuring outfit posts more regularly on here (I used to have such a hissy fit with my old camera as I'd always find I wasn't quite in the right position or the photo was out of focus, so I could be snapping away for literally an hour or two without a single decent photo to show for it!)

It took me a bit of trial and error to discover the best settings for the types of photos I regularly take and there's only a couple of settings I have to alternate between on a daily basis, so I don't end up wasting precious blogging time setting the camera up each time I whip it out. I keep it on auto white balance as I've found that gives the most natural lighting, and I always leave it on the close up setting (I like AF Macro the best) without the flash as this gives the clearest and sharpest photos. The two things that I do adjust regularly (depending on what I'm photographing) is the exposure and the focus. For focus I use 1-Area in the AF Mode the majority of the time as it's a good all rounder that can focus clearly on close ups, but it also gives clear images for outfit posts too, and I just switch to Spot when I want the focus to be on something quite small (mainly things like mascara wands, lipstick swatches and writing on beauty packaging). If it's a cloudy day I'll increase the exposure by 2 or 3 notches (this is super easy to do as there's a button on the camera which takes you straight to the exposure setting) but when I'm doing outfit posts I decrease the exposure by a few notches as my bedroom is the 'sun room' of our flat so it's always super bright. Although I haven't used it yet the camera has built in wifi too so you can upload your photos straight to Twitter/Facebook/Instagram which is such a handy shortcut for social media enthusiasts and something I really need to start making use of!

I know I'm a total photography novice compared to most bloggers and I'm pretty basic with my backgrounds (I really need to start using something other than my white floral blanket! #oops) but this little baby has made me actually look forward to taking my photographs rather than dreading it like I used to. Ideas for more exciting backgrounds on a postcard pretty please ;)

  1. This is literally the camera I've been debating about finally purchasing over the last week so it's really useful to hear your opinions. I've seen so many reviews and been deciding whether this is the one I needed even though I've wanted it since I first saw it haha.

  5. It's funny when a blogger whose photos you love (you) says they feel a newbie lol. I love having a viewfinder, I used to have to hold up a mirror to see the screen... fun times!

  8. This sounds like a really great camera! I've been looking for a more compact camera that I can take out and about as my canon 600D can be a bit big and heavy for taking everywhere!

  9. I am so happy that I have found another blogger who uses the Lumix brand! I dont have this camera, but I do have the Lumix GF3 and the settings and quality sound and look so similar!

This is also a cheaper camera than mine so it's definitely the better option for those who just want to take great quality photos for the purpose of a blog! xx
